Want a quick, painless tutorial of how we created the above image? Well look no further!
Above is a quick shot of the location we snapped with our mobile phone. As you can see, the strands of lights are what actually caused the orange glow in the background of the first image. These little blurred lights are known as “bokeh“. The reason they don’t show up the same way in our mobile photo is because we used a long lens to compress our subject to the background. The longer the focal length of your lens means the further you will be from your subject which also results in a more compressed photo and a narrower field of view. Again, this is a crash course tutorial, so I won’t go into anymore detail for now. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below.
Here is a photo of Tish’s silhouette before we added any lighting in. Shooting a quick test shot before adding any artificial lighting helps us get the exposure of the background right where we want it. Since we have no control of the brightness of the background lights, we want to make sure and adjust our camera settings to them, because we can control the power of our strobes to correctly balance everything together afterwards.
Next, we added a back light to separate our subject from the background, and we added an orange gel to give the illusion that the light was coming from the street lights.
Finally, we added our main light to light our subject. We went with a harder, more controlled light sources to add some defining shadows directly to specific areas of the face that we wanted to highlight. Soft light is generally more flattering, however, if you really want to accentuate certain features of the face and/or body a harder light source can do wonders when used correctly.
